Medical Countermeasure Development

AFRIMS is a translational research organization focused on creating and developing medical countermeasures including drugs, diagnostics and vaccines. Building off an extensive disease surveillance network, which focuses research priorities to diseases of military interest, AFRIMS brings decades of experience to product development.

AFRIMS maintains extensive laboratory expertise, allowing for research into the nature of diseases and how they spread that inform product development around the world. For example, cohort studies that track individuals with or at high risk for HIV allow for a greater understanding of how the disease develops at its earliest stages, yielding advanced suppression strategies in new exposed individuals.

As a translational organization, AFRIMS manages infrastructure to test and evaluate medical countermeasures developed internally or by external partners in pre-clinical and clinical settings. Its accredited Department of Veterinary Medicine maintains models to test a range of products and its unique insectary rears sand flies and mosquitoes to support challenge model and vector control studies. Furthermore, clinical trials sites with deep relationships with surrounding communities allow for the conduct of phase 1-4 studies in areas with endemic disease. AFRIMS can also support multisite clinical trials across its network.
