Leaders discuss capabilities and collaborations during Royal Thai Army Medical Department visit

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) hosted a Royal Thai Army Medical Department (RTAMED) delegation to explore opportunities for further collaboration and bilateral support on Aug. 10, 2023. The event marked an opportunity to celebrate the 62-year partnership and the first time that an RTAMED delegation visited WRAIR since December 2017.

Members from the U.S Army Medical Directorate- Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences attended the Royal Thai Army Medical Department 123rd Anniversary Ceremony, Jan. 9. The celebration brought together 225 attendees and professionals in military medicine from around the local region representing RTA, RTAMED, Royal Thai Navy, Royal Thai Police, private industry, government, and academia. Representatives from AFRIMS were invited to join the ceremony as the only foreign military presence.

AFRIMS Recognizes 61-Year partnership during ceremony

Members from the U.S. Army Medical Directorate - Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences celebrated 61 years of partnership with the Royal Thai Army, during a sacred worship ceremony held at Phramongkutklao Hospital, June 6, 2022. Maj. Gen. Thamrongroj Temudom RTA-AFRIMS, director general and other Thai officials joined the event. AFRIMS started out as the Thailand Southeast Asia Treaty Organization Research Project in Bangkok and has continued to evolve by developing solutions to infectious diseases through its robust collaborations with the RTA. Phramongkutklao Hospital, Phayathai Palace is a tactical clinic for the RTA established in 1932 which is also open to the public.

AFRIMS celebrates 60 years of partnership with Royal Thai Army

Members from the U.S. Army Medical Directorate-Armed Forces Research Institute of the Medical Sciences (AFRIMS) celebrated 60 years of sustained partnership in Thailand, November 4, 2021. For the last six decades, AFRIMS has played a pivotal role in improving host nation capacity and medical capabilities through its robust collaborations between the Royal Thai Army, the Cambodian public health infrastructure, and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. The partnerships evolved through the years and set a model outbreak response approach for the current global pandemic. AFRIMS remains engaged in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic throughout Southeast Asia as the institute continues to monitor and report on the COVID-19 situation both within Thailand and regionally.

Historic Thai-U.S. Alliance plans for 21st Century challenges

General James C. McConville, the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, visited the Kingdom of Thailand July 9 -10. General McConville met with General Apirat Kongsompong, Commander in Chief of the Royal Thai Army and was joined by Ambassador Michael George DeSombre for a meeting with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to discuss the strategic partnership between our nations.

U.S. provides technical training on COVID-19 testing in the Philippines

From June 1 to June 12, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Philippines-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (PAVRU) trained four medical laboratory technologists at the Victoriano Luna Medical Center, the biggest Philippine military medical facility, on biosafety, biosecurity, respiratory sample processing and storage, and COVID-19 testing techniques.

25th Anniversary of Thai-US partnership on HIV vaccine development

To mark HIV Vaccine Awareness Day on May 18, US and Thai HIV vaccine researchers are presenting information around ongoing work that resulted from Thailand’s landmark RV144 vaccine study — the only HIV vaccine clinical trial to show efficacy to date. Researchers at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Science (AFRIMS) in Bangkok, along with The U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and Thai government and university partners, play a critical role in advancing HIV vaccine development worldwide.
