This photomicrograph of a Gram-stained urethral discharge specimen, revealed some of the histopathology associated with a case of gonorrhea, which was confirmed as culture-positive, even though very few extracellular diplococci were observed. Gonorrhea is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
