Cambodia Field Research and Collaboration Sites

The AFRIMS Bacterial and Parasitic Diseases Department maintains four surveillance sites in Cambodia to detect and characterize pathogens of interest. This sites include:  

  • Battambang: This site is a regional hospital with an established microbiology laboratory. In partnership with the Battambang Referral Hospital, AFRIMS conducts flu, diarrhea and multidrug-resistant organism surveillance studies. MDRO samples from this partnership have been analyzed and found to have clinically relevant resistance profiles. 
  • Kratie: This site is a fixed facility and regional hospital. In partnership with the Kratie Referral Hospital, AFRIMS maintains a fully functional blood chemistry laboratory. This laboratory is also capable of screening liver function during malaria therapeutic intervention studies. Currently this site is being used for drug intervention study for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in partnership with Cambodian National Malaria Program, the Royal Cambodian Army and Naval Medical Research Unit-6; previous studies conducted influenza and diarrhea surveillance. 
  • Anlong Veng: This site is a fixed facility hospital. In partnership with the Anlong Veng Referral Hospital, AFRIMS maintains a fully functional blood chemistry laboratory. This laboratory is also capable of screening liver function during malaria therapeutic intervention studies. Currently this site is being used for drug intervention study for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in partnership with Cambodian National Malaria Program, the Royal Cambodian Army and Naval Medical Research Unit-6; previous studies conducted influenza, diarrhea and Plasmodium vivax surveillance. 
  • Stung Treng: This site is a fixed facility hospital. In partnership with Svay Por Health Center, AFRIMS maintains a fully functional blood chemistry laboratory. This laboratory is also capable of screening liver function during malaria therapeutic intervention studies. Currently this site is being used for drug intervention study for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in partnership with Cambodian National Malaria Program, the Royal Cambodian Army and NAMRU-6. Recently this site is also being used for flu, diarrhea and Plasmodium vivax surveillance.
